W13 Entrepreneurial Journal – A Journey of Gratitude (Reflection)
This week’s study on A Journey of Gratitude was one of the most meaningful segments of the course so far. The combination of President Thomas S. Monson’s message on gratitude, the Acton Hero videos, and the Stanford talks provided a powerful reminder of the kind of mindset an entrepreneur must develop — not only to succeed in business, but also to succeed in life.
One of the biggest lessons I learned is that gratitude is not passive; it is an active discipline. President Monson’s talk reminded me that gratitude lifts us above discouragement, helps us recognize the good around us, and protects us from the “modern leprosies” of selfishness, greed, and entitlement. What touched me most was his example of the Sunday School teacher, Lucy Gertsch, who taught by love and by service. Her willingness to put others’ needs before her own showed me that real leadership begins with the heart, not with authority or status.
The entrepreneur videos added another layer to my learning. Larry North’s testimony that thick skin and resilience are essential reinforced how important it is to stay optimistic, even when failures and setbacks come. I found it inspiring that despite his difficult upbringing, he built success by maintaining a positive attitude and a belief in people. This reminded me that gratitude helps us remain grounded in purpose, even when circumstances are tough.
I also appreciated the Stanford insights on career choices — especially avoiding the wrong job and embracing generalist skills. This resonated with my own journey, where I navigate multiple areas like technology, financial inclusion, and innovation. The message that we should choose work we enjoy, rather than trying to satisfy external expectations, felt very timely.
Overall, this week helped me see entrepreneurship through a more human lens. Gratitude is not only a spiritual virtue; it is a strategic advantage. It keeps relationships healthy, strengthens resilience, and expands perspective. As I continue my entrepreneurial projects, I want to cultivate gratitude more intentionally — in my work, my family, my partnerships, and the opportunities I receive.
I look forward to learning how to align this mindset with my long-term goals and becoming a more grounded, service-driven entrepreneur.
